The European Crisis and its Human Cost is Caritas Europa's 2nd report dedicated to the social impacts of the crisis and the austerity measures implemented to tackle it.
Commissioned by Caritas Europa and Caritas organisations in 7 EU Member States (Cyprus, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Romania and Spain), the report makes an in-depth examination of the impact that current policies are having on people in the EU countries worst affected by the economic crisis. It describes the human impacts of the crisis and of austerity policies, and documents the growing number of people struggling with poverty and social exclusion.
The Report informs also on the measures undertaken by the EU and the national authorities and on the impact of the “Troika Programmes”. Furthermore, it shows how the crisis has affected access to social services and healthcare.
“We believe that this report can contribute to more awareness of the impact of the crisis on the vulnerable groups. It confirms the calls for alternative policy solutions. Politicians have choices when deciding which measures must be taken to alleviate the worst effects of the crisis,” says Jorge Nuño Mayer, Secretary General of Caritas Europa.
