Caritas Italiana is responding to an earthquake in Northern Italy, which killed at least seven people, caused serious damage to buildings in several towns and left about 3,000 people homeless. The magnitude-6.0 quake struck in the middle of Saturday night, about 35km north of the city of Bologna.
"We are close to the people in prayer and in particular the families of the victims. We will support the local church in providing aid," said Caritas Italy’s Director Don Francesco Soddu, who immediately traveled to the affected area.
"The affected population is reacting with an attitude of confidence in the solidarity network. In particular the network of charity in Italy, has always mobilized, being able to coordinate and give space and voice to a wide generosity and good will,” he said.
Don Soddu discussed the response with local Caritas staff, including the directors of Caritas Emilia-Romagna, Modena and Bologna and Archbishop Paolo Rabitti of Ferrara-Comacchio. Local Caritas staff members are ready to provide shelter and first aid.
Pope Benedict XVI said that he was “spiritually close to those affected by this calamity” during his regular Sunday Angelus greeting in St. Peter’s Square.
The quake was the worst to hit the country since the L’Aquila tremor killed nearly 300 people in central Italy in 2009.
The quake was distinctly heard throughout the North (from Friuli and Liguria) and part of central Italy. The quake was also felt in Lombardy, in the diocese of Mantua, and in Veneto, in the diocese of Adria-Rovigoand along the axis from Verona to Vicenza. After the appeal of Benedict XVI, prayer and solidarity so thatnormal life can resume as soon as possible was also expressed by the Italian Episcopal Conference.
Charities from all over Italy have already expressed closeness and willingness to help, as the entireinternational network, with Caritas Europa and Caritas Internationalis ready to contribute to the work ofCaritas Italy
