Brussels, 26 May 2008 - Caritas Europa held last week its Regional Conference 2008 in Bled, Slovenia. Hosted by Caritas Slovenia, the event started on Thursday 21 May and lasted until Saturday 24 May 2008.
More than 100 participants coming from 44 countries in Europe gathered under the paroles 'From Exclusion to Equity in Europe'. Together with representatives from Caritas Europa member organisations, a series of distinguish guests attended the conference, including European Commissioner Vladimir Spidla, Slovenian Minister Marjeta Cotman and MEP Ljudmila Novak.
Using the lens of the Church's Catholic Social Teaching, participants focused on social security and social protection in Europe in the perspective of demographic changes, labour relations and welfare state.
Participants were also informed on Caritas Europa's increasing collaboration with EU institutions. A presentation of the new EU-cofinanced INCLUSION programme was delivered and a special session was dedicated to debating perspectives for the proposed 2010 as the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion.
