Child Guarantee must be implemented urgently

The EU Alliance for Investing in Children: statement

Caritas Europa, together with the EU Alliance for Investing in Children welcomes the European Commission’s recently presented ambitious proposal on the Council Recommendation establishing the Child Guarantee. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, 18 million or 22.2% of children in the EU were growing up at risk of poverty and social exclusion. This figure is expected to increase to one out of four children due to the socio-economic consequences of the pandemic. It is high time to take action and fight child and family poverty. Caritas Europa calls on the Council to adopt the Child Guarantee Council Recommendation as soon as possible and to start its implementation within 6 months after adoption. We also urge the EU Member States to set even more ambitious national targets in their fight against child poverty to achieve the SDG 2030 targets.
