About Caritas Kosovo

Caritas Kosova is a corresponding member of Caritas Europa.

Caritas Kosova was founded in 1992 to respond to the widespread systemic poverty levels plaguing Kosovo, among the highest in Europe. Caritas Kosova intervention distributed humanitarian aid to the most vulnerable and marginalised people in society. Since 1999, Caritas Kosova has been able to strengthen their organisational structure through the support of the Caritas members and the creation of a parish Caritas groups capacity building programme. Caritas Kosova programmes and activities are supported by the Caritas Network, operating all over the region. Acting as a “voice of the voiceless” and protector of human dignity, Cartias Kosova is committed to its four mandates: provide emergency relief and sustainable rehabilitation, social and health assistance, sustainable development and advocacy and lobby.

Today the mission of Caritas in Kosova is to accompany the human beings in their life journey: the challenges, pain and needs that they are facing and that are still urgent although our country isn’t in an emergency situation anymore. Today Caritas Kosova is close to the people in need, especially those marginalized and vulnerable ones that go through life emotionally hurt with very little human attention.

Caritas Kosova emergency relief and sustainable rehabilitation sector provides emergency aid in cases of natural or man-made disaster, such as floods, landslides, extreme cold and conflict. Our interventions focus on the basic needs of victims, vulnerable people and communities with basic rehabilitation material.

Social and Health Assistance Sector aims to improve the living conditions to the most vulnerable people and restore their human dignity, improve health conditions of people in “Home Care Municipalities”, enhance social awareness and responsibilities of the public opinion towards most vulnerable and marginalized people.

Through the Sector of Sustainable Development Caritas Kosova improves living conditions of vulnerable groups (i.e. victims of trafficking), reduces external dependency and restores human dignity.

Through the Lobby and Advocacy Sector we strive to increase the Awareness of Government, Civil Society and Religious Authorities regarding the basic human needs and rights of the of the marginalized and oppressed people in our society, and ultimately increasing the knowledge of these groups to claim their rights.

Caritas Kosova HQ is based in Ferizaj, and as of December 2016, it is the employer for over 600 employees, and it counts over 400 volunteers in 5 regional offices  in Pristina, Prizren, Gjakova, Mitrovica, and Leposavic.
