About Caritas Germany
The German Caritas Association (Deutscher Caritasverband) is the oldest and biggest Caritas organisation worldwide. It was founded in 1897 in an attempt to better structure and coordinate the social work of the Catholic Church. The work of Caritas in Germany covers many areas: healthcare, care for the elderly, education, care for people with disabilities, help for people experiencing poverty, for the homeless, for people suffering from addictions, and for migrants.
Some 25,000 facilities, organised in over 300 local and 27 diocesan Caritas organisations carry out the social work of Caritas. Caritas Germany has close to 700,000 staff and about half a million volunteers. The national Caritas organisation headquartered in Freiburg, the birthplace of Caritas, coordinates the work. In the field of policy and advocacy, it speaks up in the name of the most vulnerable members of society.
Since 1920, Caritas Germany has also been active abroad, with disaster response, social programs and peacebuilding activities worldwide. “Caritas International”, the international department of Caritas Germany, currently operates in about 80 countries. It cooperates closely with partner organisations on all continents.
