Ahead of the European Union summit with Latin America and Caribbean States (CELAC), which will take place in Brussels on 17-18 July 2023, Caritas Europa joined dozens of European civil society organisations and networks in formulating key recommendations for the renewed partnership between both regions, focusing on social inclusion and human rights.

In line with Caritas Europa’s paper on the EU-CELAC Summit, published in April 2023, this joint position calls on EU and CELAC leaders to commit to:

  • Establish an official mechanism for civil society engagement in the EU-CELAC partnership in the long term.
  • Place inequalities reduction, the priorities of LAC countries, and transparency and accountability at the centre of the EU’s Global Gateway strategy.
  • Ensure the enforcement of corporate accountability and due diligence mechanisms.
  • Facilitate the availability of financial resources for the just green transition, including through debt cancellation, progressive taxation, strengthening of social protection systems, and investments in public services.
