Caritas Europa co-signed an open letter to call on EU lawmakers to address the potential risks associated with the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum.

The open letter, co-signed by over 50 organisations, addresses EU negotiators, expressing grave concerns about the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. It warns that the current draft could normalise harmful practices like detention for children, increase profiling, and jeopardise the safety of people in “safe third countries.”

In the letter we also criticise the Pact for contradicting existing EU efforts against racism and integration, potentially perpetuating discrimination. Instead, we urge investing in humane solutions, fair responsibility sharing among EU states, support for sea rescues, legal aid, and safe migration routes. We ask EU leaders to shape a welcoming Europe that upholds human rights for everyone, and we point to the Temporary Protection Directive as a positive model to follow.
