The COVID-19 pandemic has put enormous strain on multiple sectors of society. Social services, in particular, have been greatly affected, with many having to adapt their functioning to comply with national confinement regulations.

These services, which are more essential now than ever, especially for the vulnerable among us, face shortages of personal protective gear (PPE), funding, and general recognition and support at a national and EU policy level.

This is why on Thursday 25 June, Caritas Europa joined together with 11 partners from representing different social service sectors for an online summit which discussed how the EU can better support these services during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as after. We have added our voice to a joint statement demanding more recognition, urgent action, and more resilience regarding social services.

We believe social services are essential services.
