In this moment of rapidly escalating regional tension in the Middle East, Caritas Europa urges all parties to step back from the brink immediately, to refrain from further military action and to uphold their obligation to protect civilians without exception. The loss of innocent life, particularly that of children, demands urgent restraint and a renewed commitment to diplomacy.

The recent acts of war dramatically increase tension, violence, and instability across the region, jeopardising prospects for sustainable peace. They constitute grave violations of human dignity, the rule of law, and International Law, including the UN Charter and International Humanitarian Law. Schools, hospitals, places of worship, and densely populated civilian areas – spaces that should remain sanctuaries of learning, care, and safety – are protected under International Humanitarian Law. Attacks on such sites, whether deliberate or reckless, are morally indefensible and legally prohibited.

Amidst these conditions, Caritas continues its vital work. Caritas Jerusalem has maintained its efforts to prepare and distribute hot meals to elderly people and to provide lifesaving medical services in its health centres in places such as Taybeh, Ramallah and across Gaza. Caritas Lebanon immediately activated its Emergency Response Unit and deployed field teams across seven governorates and 19 districts, providing hot meals, organising humanitarian convoys to communities remaining in border villages and supporting displaced people in shelters.

Caritas Europa stands in unwavering solidarity with Caritas organisations who are responding to this war and the people they serve, amplifying their voices and drawing attention to the urgent humanitarian needs on the ground.

Caritas Europa calls on the EU and its Member States to take a clear and principled stance in support of peace. The EU should prioritise de-escalation, international law, and the protection of civilians, and refrain from political or military support that could contribute to further escalation by any party. The EU should strongly oppose unilateral measures such as annexation that undermine the prospects for a two-state solution and the Palestinian right to self-determination. Instead, the EU must use its diplomatic influence to promote dialogue, support humanitarian responses, and advance a constructive path toward a just and lasting peace in the region.
