The need for a holistic approach to humanitarian, development and peace work

Increasingly, protracted crises, fragile and conflict-affected contexts and climate change have created a need for an approach that brings together development, humanitarian and peace work. The Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus approach seeks to address root causes, enhance effectiveness and create a smooth transition and coordination between humanitarian, development and peace work.

The purpose of this paper is not to present detailed technical guidance, nor is it a comprehensive exploration of Nexus principles. Instead, this paper serves to capture internal thinking on the Caritas approach to the Nexus by Caritas Europa member organisations and their worldwide Caritas partners, to compile good practices and challenges in the realisation of the Nexus and to put forward accessible and shared principles to inform strategic, programmatic and advocacy priorities.

While this paper was drafted by the Caritas Europa taskforce, it incorporates input from the wider Confederation, and therefore aims to be useful for the Caritas confederation in their planning and implementation of the Nexus as well as for other international and national/local civil society organisations who are engaged in Nexus programming. It should also serve as a beneficial resource for donors who are seeking to mainstream a Nexus approach in their funding priorities and strategies.
