Where humanitarian, development and peace work intersect

The Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus (hereafter the HDP Nexus or Nexus) is a framework that allows humanitarian, development and peace organisations to recontextualise their work within a holistic framework and systematically work to create more efficient and relevant responses to the growing needs of populations affected by protracted conflict and other crises. While the European Union (EU) and some Member States have progressed in utilising a Nexus approach, they can step up efforts by improving cooperation and coherence internally and externally, better including local actors and funding the Nexus.

As Caritas Europa we call on EU Member States to:

  1. Make funding work for the Nexus;
  2. allow and support local organisations to lead on the Nexus;
  3. prioritise context-specific programming;
  4. step up coordination and consultation;
  5. utilise a Nexus approach to prepare for and respond to climate-related emergencies.
